Varan the Unbelieveable... Yep.

You gotta love TOHO. They have managed to make the kinds of movies that people like me just love to watch, not to mention, try to find MORE of their films too! Ahh monsters, big, evil, and some downright goofy.

Yesterday I found an amazing DVD: "Varan the Unbelievable" (or Varan with the Unbelievable Neck Goiter) and I was so excited to find it I never bothered to look and see if it was actually in English. Actually, subtitles aren't that annoying, and it's not like there were intricate plot twists that were hard to follow. Hey, it's a monster flick!

I think the underlying point of this film is to leave butterflies alone. Don't go looking for them in lush, beautiful forbidden places. That's how two people died in the beginning and then of course, everyone has to go looking to find out why they died. Guess no on figured that butterflies would start such an immense landslide. In the "Tibet of Japan" of all places.

Evidently, there in the Japanese Tibet a rather large creature has lived undisturbed for a very very very long time. Annoyed occasionally by the music and singing of a group of worshippers who live high in the mountains around his placid lake. The leader kept waving branches as if to pacify the beast.. Then it happens, his peace is destroyed by a child, then a woman and then shortly after them, the whole Japanese Military. Thus we learn, Varan can fly, destroy ships and stomp Tokyo too. Nothing like a good monster stomp!

I won't tell you how it ends, but suffice to say I'm sure Varan reached for some Pepto Bismol after the credits were done.
